From the CEO: Wine Tourism Produces Good Fruits for Cape Town
|
|

Wine trade plays a large role in promoting the growing wine tourism industry |
As the world becomes smaller and more networked, niche tourism is gaining momentum as an important approach to identifying target markets and converting would-be visitors. Tourism minister, Marthinus van Schalkwyk, has previously said that wine tourism contributes R5 billion to the local wine industry’s annual R22 billion turnover, making it an important contributor to sustained job creation and economic growth. The wine industry provides employment for around 275 000 South Africans.
The potential for wine events and wine experiences is rapidly evolving with showcases such as the Good Food and Wine Show, the TOPS Gugulethu Wine Festival, Soup Sip and Bread in Durbanville, and the Wacky Wine Weekend in Robertson being just the tip of the iceberg.
Earlier this year, The International Wine Review reported that some of the best sweet wines in the world are produced in South Africa and that wine tourism is better developed in South Africa than any other country. The writers Don Winkler and Mike Potashnik added, “While the country is located far from most foreign wine lovers, it offers huge rewards to those who visit its wine country.” Read the full report here.

Cape Town Tourism’s representatives Anneli Bronkhorst (The Netherlands) of WW Tourism and Barbara Zieme of Akomasa (Germany) with CT Partnership's Zaid Minty |
Cape Town Tourism (CTT) representatives from Germany and The Netherlands recently addressed CTT members at the University of Stellenbosch Bellville campus. The session allowed the local tourism industry access to insights from these markets, which are key priorities for inbound travel to Cape Town.
Mariëtte du Toit-Helmbold, CEO of Cape Town Tourism, said both German and Dutch are big spenders in Cape Town, spending R1.3 billion and R0.7 billion, respectively, per year on average. “These are still markets we predominantly rely upon for the bulk of our visitors,” she said, adding that Germany was one of the few European countries that has not been in recession.
